Coordination with Contractors

We worked very closely with an exceptional team of contractors and tradespeople on this house to achieve very high quality results. Some of the distinctive designs that give the house its unique character were only possible because of the close colaboration between architects and builders.

Early Phases of Construction

After the excavation was completed, concrete footings and foundations were poured and the first floor framing was put in place.

Framing and Sheathing

Once the foundation and first floor is was in place, the wall and roof framing could be erected. The wall and roof sheathing then goes on the framing ready for brick and roof shingles. At this point, some work such as plumbing can begin.

Roofing and Masonry

In preparation for ordering the roofing shingles, we met with the client, the roofer and the mason to review samples of the roofing material. By laying out the samples at the site next to actual brick samples, we were able to select the specific colors to be used and the pattern in which they would be applied, taking into account the neighborhood's character and the variations in the brick color. With the framing, sheathing and house wrap complete, the mason could begin laying brick and stone and the roofer could put down the roofing underlayment, flashing and shingles.

Electrical, Plumbing, Ventilation and Heating/Cooling

Utility systems aren't terribly exciting, but are critical to the "quality of life" in the house. They're also becoming more extensive, more complex and more closely regulated by building codes every year. Careful coordination of these systems are critical during construction - all those pipes, ducts and wires have to fit through some rather small spaces! Additional care had to be taken in this house - with an indoor Endless Pool, we had to make sure that the additional heat and humidity would be accounted for in the ventilation design.

Fireplaces

This house has four fireplaces. Two are convenient gas-only units. This two-sided unit, shown on the upper-left above, is being installed between a bedroom and the connected bath suite. The other photos show the construction of one of the raised-hearth, wood and gas burning fireplaces, located in the kitchen and breakfast area. These photos show the process of constructing the core firebox, the surrounding masonry and the finished stone cladding. A mantle will be added later to complete the fireplace.

Interior Framing and Ceilings

Following the completion of the exterior and interior wall framing, the carpenters began the framing of the house's distinctive ceilings. We worked closely with the skilled carpenters to achieve the client's ideas for complex ceilings.
